Reported by Imran Qureshi (Staff Writer) · Bing News - Politics (India) ·
A massive political controversy has erupted in Punjab following the death by suicide of a man in Sangrur over the rampant drug menace in the state. Opposition parties have launched state-wide protests and targeted the ruling dispensation, demanding an impartial investigation and strict accountability. National human rights authorities have taken cognizance of the matter, while a special investigation team has been constituted by the state police. Allegations have surfaced that the deceased faced immense pressure and harassment from local ruling party workers after questioning state leadership regarding the unabated supply of synthetic drugs in his village. Opposition leaders have demanded a central agency probe and strict action in the case as demonstrations continue across multiple districts ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, turning the fight against illicit narcotics into a primary political flashpoint across the poll-bound state.
