Alternative fuel vehicles gain ground beyond India's traditional auto markets
Reported by Kavya Rao (Senior Writer) · Bing News - Automobile (India) ·
Alternative fuel vehicles, including CNG, hybrid, and EV vehicles, have gained significant ground in India's passenger vehicle market. For the first time, they surpassed petrol-only models in August, capturing 41.95% of retail sales compared to petrol's 40.85%. The trend is a result of a broader spread of adoption beyond traditional strongholds. Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, and Karnataka, which accounted for 59.9% of retail sales in August 2025, saw their share decline to 53.7% in August 2026, while the rest of the country's share increased from 40.1% to 46.3% over the same period. States like Tamil Nadu, Delhi, and Andhra Pradesh also saw significant growth in their alternative fuel vehicle sales. Strong overall volume growth, with a 38% increase in alternative fuel passenger vehicle sales in August this year, outpaced overall PV sales, which grew by 16%. The growth is attributed to a soft August 2025 base and a festive season that resulted in below-expectations sales. The true test of the season will lie in showroom conversion through September to November.
