Channel 4 has announced plans to cut 340 jobs by the end of the year, reducing its workforce by 28%, as part of a strategic review aimed at transforming the organisation to focus on creating a simpler and more efficient operating model. The network, which broadcasts popular shows such as Gogglebox and The Great British Bake Off, will lose around 1,250 staff members, with the redundancies expected to have a significant impact across the organisation. Channel 4's chief executive, Priya Dogra, stated that the announcement marks the first phase of the transformation, ensuring the network is the right shape and size to deliver its future strategy and focus investment in distinctive programming. The company cited a rapidly changing media landscape, including evolving audience habits, increasing global competition, a challenging consumer environment, and a volatile advertising market, as a key driver for the changes. The job cuts are expected to ensure that more of Channel 4's £1bn income is spent on screen, with the network focusing on creating a more sustainable and sustainable model. The news has been met with concern from the culture, media and sport committee, with chair Caroline Dinenage describing the announcement as 'deeply worrying' for the talented and dedicated people who work at Channel 4. The network's biggest hits include Gogglebox, Taskmaster, and The Great British Bake Off, which have faced a challenging few years as they compete with digital platforms and the shrinking advertising market for traditional TV networks. Channel 4 is publicly owned but funded by advertising, and the redundancies represent the biggest round of layoffs in the network's history.
