The Porvorim Elevated Corridor, a major upgrade to the state's road network, has transformed the traffic landscape in Goa. Completed in just two years and five months, this 5.15km flyover has cut travel time between Mapusa and Panaji by up to 30 minutes. The new corridor connects directly to the Atal Setu bridge that crosses the Mandovi River, reducing congestion and improving air quality. The MG Cyberster, a car aptly suited to Goa's vibe, was taken for a spin to test the corridor's effectiveness. With its 510hp and 725Nm, the Cyberster cruised down the elevated road, the panoramic view of Porvorim's greenery a stunning sight. The viaduct section, supported by 87 pillars, is paved tarmac with expansion joints and not completely straight, making it tempting to push through the bends. However, exercising restraint, we stuck to the 65kph speed limit. The proximity of buildings to the corridor was a challenge, with engineers having to navigate narrow spaces between structures. Despite the challenges, the Porvorim Elevated Corridor has been constructed at a cost of Rs 641.46 crore, featuring 10.30 kilometres of service roads, 28 minor junctions, eight box culverts, and a rainwater harvesting system. The corridor's modern lighting setup includes 515 streetlights, with two high-mast lights and ten overhead gantries with cameras to be installed soon. In conversation with Sandip Prabhu Chodnekar, Principal Chief Engineer, Goa Public Works Department, the project's challenges were highlighted, including the need to construct the viaduct in a narrow space. The Porvorim Elevated Corridor is expected to boost the economy by improving intra-state connectivity, reducing congestion, and making commutes easier for residents and tourists alike.
