The Asian Games have officially commenced in Japan with Qatar emerging victorious in the men's basketball competition, defeating Iran 59-35 at the Aichi International Arena in Nagoya. This marks the beginning of a multisport showpiece that boasts more participants than the Olympics. The tournament will feature 43 sports, with medal finals set to take place on September 20. Several events, including basketball, football, cricket, hockey, and modern pentathlon, will commence before the official opening ceremony on September 19 and conclude on October 4. The event is also an opportunity for athletes to compete for Los Angeles 2028 Olympics qualifying spots. Over 17,000 athletes and officials are expected to participate in the Games. Qatar's Michael Lewis, a US-born player, scored a game-high 21 points in the match, stating that winning at least one game is crucial to securing a spot in the next round. Taiwan also secured a win, defeating Jordan 83-80 in another Group B encounter. Organizers have implemented an innovative accommodation system, with athletes staying in a range of venues, from cruise liners to standard hotel rooms. However, the typhoon season in Japan poses a threat, with record rainfall causing disruptions and wet weather forecasted for the coming days. Competitors will include Philippine tennis sensation Alexandra Eala and world-class teenage talents Vaibhav Sooryavanshi from India and Yu Zidi from China.
